Histoire du domaine

In 1971, Véronique and Aimé Guibert purchased an old farmhouse in the Gassac Valley, near Aniane. They were supported in their wine-growing venture by Henri Enjalbert, a geographer and specialist in vineyard geology, who recognised the potential of the site’s glacial gravel soils. In 1972, the couple planted 17,000 non-cloned Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings selected from Bordeaux estates. Between 1972 and 1978, a wine storehouse and a fermentation vat were built on the site of an ancient Gallo-Roman mill, situated above cold water springs. The first red vintage was vinified in 1978 with the guidance of Émile Peynaud, then bottled in 1980 as a table wine. The Rosé Frizant was created in 1981, followed by the estate’s first white wine in 1986. In 1991, Aimé Guibert launched Moulin de Gassac, a separate venture based on partnerships with local winegrowers. From the 2000s onwards, the couple’s five sons — Samuel, Gaël, Amélien, Roman and Basile — gradually joined the business. Following the death of Aimé Guibert in May 2016, they have jointly taken charge of managing the estate. Samuel Guibert runs the estate and oversees the winemaking process, with the support of Basile Guibert.

A full-bodied white with aromas of apricot, honeysuckle, stewed pear, cooked lemon and herbs. Some salted-almond notes. Rich and waxy with bright acidity and concentrated, exotic layers. Long and opulent. Blend of 36% viognier, 24% petit manseng, 22% chardonnay and 18% chenin. Drink now.

32% Viognier, 19% Petit Manseng, 18% Chardonnay, 14% Chenin, 17% Bourboulenc, Petit Courbu, Muscat Ottonel, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Muscat d’Alexandrie, Gros Manseng, Sémillon (France). Neheleschol (Israel), Amigne (Switzerland), Sercial de Madère (Portugal), Khondorni, Tchilar (Armenia), Albariño (Spain), Falanghina, Fiano, Grechetto (Italy). Heavy bottle. These guys are a bit insane. Look at those grape varieties. Tangy nose, like yogurt stirred through with raw dark honey. Very, very floral on the palate – so much so that you almost don’t notice the weight and complexity, the focus and drive. A coiled spring of acidity through fruit that shimmers through the spectrum from English orchard to tropical and back again. Morello cherries, grapefruit, mango, green apples, greengage, white peach. And then, just as you get distracted by all the mouth-watering fruit, the spice starts to filter through, from back to front: white pepper, black pepper, clove, fennel seed. It builds and builds. Like a Mozart symphony, an edge of anger under the beauty. Clenched, taut, hard bones under the riffs and ripples of pretty fruit. This needs way more time to really be what it is.
