Histoire du domaine
Jean Martell, originally from Jersey, settled in Cognac and founded the Martell house there in 1715. He then developed a business trading in Cognac eaux-de-vie, aimed in particular at the British and northern European markets. In 1737, he married Rachel Lallemand, the daughter of a doctor from Cognac. Upon Jean Martell’s death in 1753, Rachel Martell took over the management of the business and ran it for nearly thirty years. The house’s exports reached India in 1781, the United States in 1783, then South America from 1817, Africa from 1848 and Asia from 1858. Théodore Martell acquired the Château de Chanteloup estate in 1838. In 1912, Édouard Martell created Martell Cordon Bleu. After nine generations under the management of the Martell family, the house was acquired by the Pernod Ricard group in 2001. Christophe Valtaud is now Martell’s ninth cellar master.
