Histoire du domaine
The origins of Courvoisier date back to 1796, when Louis Gallois and Emmanuel Courvoisier established a wine and spirits house near Paris. In 1828, their sons Félix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois founded a house in Jarnac dedicated exclusively to cognac. Félix Courvoisier had the Maison Courvoisier built in Jarnac in 1857. On his death, having no heir, the business was passed on in 1866 to his nephews Félix and Jules Curlier. In 1869, the house was awarded the title of official supplier to the court of Emperor Napoleon III. The British Simon family, who had previously been distributors of the brand, took control of Courvoisier in 1909. During the Second World War, the company was temporarily entrusted to Georges Hubert and Christian Braastad, before being returned to the Simon family in 1945. The Canadian group Hiram Walker acquired Courvoisier in 1964, ushering in a period of successive changes in ownership. In April 2024, the Campari Group finalised the acquisition of Courvoisier S.A.S. through Courvoisier Holding France S.A.S. The house owns, amongst other properties, the Domaine Guilloteau in Les Métairies, and Thibaut Hontanx has been its seventh master blender since 2022.
Collection Erte No.7
The seventh edition of the Courvoisier Erté Collection, "La Part des Anges" was released in 1994 in a decanter decorated by the Art Deco artist. It contains a blend of old Grande Champagne cognacs including eaux-de-vie dating back to 1892, the year of Erté's birth. Its design illustrates the natural evaporation of cognac during its barrel aging.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- "La Part des Anges" refers to the fraction of cognac that evaporates from the barrels during aging. Erté represented it as an essence rising towards angels.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1994
- Style of the cuvée
- A very old Grande Champagne cognac, resulting from a blend of rare eaux-de-vie and seeking depth, maturity, and complexity rather than a young or blending profile.
- Position within the range
- The seventh decanter of a prestigious limited artistic collection, distinct from the permanent Courvoisier range.
Histoire de la cuvée
Courvoisier commissioned Erté to create a series of decanters dedicated to the stages and symbols of cognac production. Launched in 1988, the collection continued with an annual release; number 7, titled "La Part des Anges", was issued in 1994. This creation is among the "jewels" introduced under Master Blender Jean-Marc Olivier.
