Histoire du domaine
The origins of Courvoisier date back to 1796, when Louis Gallois and Emmanuel Courvoisier established a wine and spirits house near Paris. In 1828, their sons Félix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois founded a house in Jarnac dedicated exclusively to cognac. Félix Courvoisier had the Maison Courvoisier built in Jarnac in 1857. On his death, having no heir, the business was passed on in 1866 to his nephews Félix and Jules Curlier. In 1869, the house was awarded the title of official supplier to the court of Emperor Napoleon III. The British Simon family, who had previously been distributors of the brand, took control of Courvoisier in 1909. During the Second World War, the company was temporarily entrusted to Georges Hubert and Christian Braastad, before being returned to the Simon family in 1945. The Canadian group Hiram Walker acquired Courvoisier in 1964, ushering in a period of successive changes in ownership. In April 2024, the Campari Group finalised the acquisition of Courvoisier S.A.S. through Courvoisier Holding France S.A.S. The house owns, amongst other properties, the Domaine Guilloteau in Les Métairies, and Thibaut Hontanx has been its seventh master blender since 2022.
Collection Erte No.5
Collection Erté No. 5 "Dégustation" is a Courvoisier cognac released in 1992 as the fifth installment in a series illustrating the steps and gestures associated with cognac. It is a distinct blend of old Grande Champagne cognacs, featuring eaux-de-vie dating back to 1892, the year of Erté's birth. It is presented in a numbered decanter adorned with an Art Deco design specially created for this edition.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name "Erté" pays tribute to the Art Deco artist Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, who created the collection's decor. Number 5, entitled "Dégustation", evokes the movement of cognac swirling in the glass, the first step in tasting and the release of aromas.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1992
- Style of the cuvée
- Grande Champagne cognac crafted from a blend of very old eaux-de-vie, aiming for a mature, deep, and complex profile rather than the livelier style of younger expressions.
- Position within the range
- Fifth limited edition of a prestige collection intended for lovers of old cognacs and collectors.
Histoire de la cuvée
The Collection Erté was launched by Courvoisier in 1988 in collaboration with Erté. The first seven editions were released successively, each featuring a blend and an illustration dedicated to a step or aspect of cognac production. Released in 1992, the fifth edition, "Dégustation", represents the swirling of cognac in the glass and follows "Vieillissement" from 1991 and precedes "L’Esprit du Cognac" from 1993.
