Histoire du domaine
The origins of Courvoisier date back to 1796, when Louis Gallois and Emmanuel Courvoisier established a wine and spirits house near Paris. In 1828, their sons Félix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois founded a house in Jarnac dedicated exclusively to cognac. Félix Courvoisier had the Maison Courvoisier built in Jarnac in 1857. On his death, having no heir, the business was passed on in 1866 to his nephews Félix and Jules Curlier. In 1869, the house was awarded the title of official supplier to the court of Emperor Napoleon III. The British Simon family, who had previously been distributors of the brand, took control of Courvoisier in 1909. During the Second World War, the company was temporarily entrusted to Georges Hubert and Christian Braastad, before being returned to the Simon family in 1945. The Canadian group Hiram Walker acquired Courvoisier in 1964, ushering in a period of successive changes in ownership. In April 2024, the Campari Group finalised the acquisition of Courvoisier S.A.S. through Courvoisier Holding France S.A.S. The house owns, amongst other properties, the Domaine Guilloteau in Les Métairies, and Thibaut Hontanx has been its seventh master blender since 2022.
Collection Erte No.1
La Collection Erté No.1 "Vigne" is a Courvoisier cognac launched in 1988 as part of a collaboration with the Art Deco artist Erté. This first edition pairs a blend of old cognacs with a decanter illustrating the vine, the starting point of the cognac production cycle. It belongs to a series of collector decanders dedicated to the various stages of its elaboration.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name pays tribute to Erté, the artistic name of Romain de Tirtoff, who designed the decors for the collection. Number 1, entitled "Vigne", represents the first stage in the production of cognac.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1988
- Style of the cuvée
- Extra blend cognac crafted from old cognacs, sought after for its mature character and its status as a collector's cognac.
- Position within the range
- Prestige and collector's edition, created as one of the exceptional cognacs of the Maison.
Histoire de la cuvée
Created under the tenure of master blender Jean-Marc Olivier, the Collection Erté began in 1988 with the No.1 "Vigne" edition. Erté designed a series of decors for Courvoisier successively illustrating the stages of cognac creation, with each edition receiving a distinct blend. The first decanter symbolizes the vine and the quality of the grapes at the origin of the blend.
