Histoire du domaine

Before becoming an independent estate, Monbrison was a farmstead attached to Château d’Arsac, which was then associated with the de Ségur family. In 1749, the farmstead was sold to M. de Copmartin, an adviser to the King in Bordeaux. His heirs sold it in 1818 to Paul Georges Conqueré de Monbrison, who expanded the vineyard and gave his name to the château. The estate subsequently passed, notably, into the hands of Isodore Feuillebois, Gustave Chaix d’Est-Ange, and then the Lavendier family. In 1922, the Lavendier heirs sold Monbrison to Robert M. Davis and his wife Kathleen Johnston. The couple added the neighbouring Cordet plot to the estate, which had been contributed by Kathleen Johnston. The economic crisis and the Second World War led to the vineyard’s demise, but it was replanted in the 1960s by Elizabeth Davis and her husband Christian Vonderheyden. Their son Jean-Luc took charge of winemaking from 1976 and had a new wine cellar built in 1978. Following his death in 1992, his brother Laurent Vonderheyden took over the management of the estate. Since January 2018, his daughter Alix has been working alongside him in the management of Château Monbrison; Margot Franzkowiak currently serves as cellar master there.

The soft, supple, medium-bodied 2003 exhibits a plum/ruby/garnet color, elegant fruit, herb, and spice characteristics, but little depth and persistence. It should be consumed over the next 5-8 years.

Dark crimson. Mild savoury notes. Slightly intriguing. Very light and relatively tart and gassy. Simple. Lots of acidity.
