Histoire du domaine
The name Fonplégade is linked to a fountain situated on the estate, the name of which means ‘fountain of abundance’. In 1852, the wine merchant Jean-Pierre Beylot had the château built and expanded the estate to its current area of 18.5 hectares. The estate subsequently belonged to the Duke of Morny and then to the Countess of Galard, half-brother and half-sister of Napoleon III. In 1867, Château Fonplégade was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair. The estate claims to have been classified as a Premier Grand Cru at that time, a status it is said to have retained until the mid-1940s. Following a period of decline in the estate’s facilities, Denise and Stephen Adams acquired the property in 2004. They undertook the renovation of the château and cellars, as well as a restructuring of the vineyard. The estate obtained Ecocert organic farming certification in 2013 and has been supported by Corinne Comme in its biodynamic approach since 2017. Éloi Jacob, managing director and technical director since 2014, oversees the technical aspects of the estate; Stéphane Derenoncourt acts as an oenological consultant.
