Histoire du domaine
In 1791, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel inherited the Cos and Pomys estates, which included, in particular, 14 hectares of vineyards. He gradually expanded the vineyard, which eventually reached 45 hectares, and carried out several technical experiments, notably with glass corks and new grape varieties. Cos wine was exported to India as early as 1838, which contributed to the oriental inspiration behind the estate’s architecture. Louis Gaspard d’Estournel commissioned the construction of the pagodas that still characterise the château today. Burdened by debt, he sold the estate in 1852 to the London banker Charles Cecil Martyns and died the following year. In 1855, Cos d’Estournel was recognised as a deuxième cru classé. After several changes of ownership, the estate was acquired in 1917 by Fernand Ginestet; his descendants from the Prats family subsequently took over its management. Michel Reybier became the owner in 2000 and had a fully gravity-fed winery built in 2008. Today, Dominique Arangoïts is the technical director and Angélique Meynieu holds the post of cellar master.
