Château Ausone 1990 Bouteille (75cl) BE EA

Château Ausone 1990 is a red wine from Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux, crafted by Château Ausone, then owned by Alain and Catherine Vauthier, and classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion. It blends equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Wine Advocate awards it 91/100, with a published drinking window from 2009 to 2024; Jancis Robinson rates it 17/20, with a window of 2007 to 2017. Wine Spectator gives it 92/100 and indicates a production of 2 150 cases. Critics describe an Ausone that has reached aromatic maturity, combining ripe or jammy fruits, dried herbs, incense, and crushed stone, whose firm structure, tannins, and mineral backbone lengthen the finish.

Château Ausone

Château Ausone is a wine estate in Saint-Émilion, situated on a limestone hillside overlooking the Dordogne valley. Its 7-hectare vineyard, laid out in terraces, is predominantly planted with Cabernet Franc and supplemented with Merlot. The estate is owned by the Vauthier family, who have been associated with the estate since 1690.

Histoire du domaine

The estate’s archives mention the ‘pierrières et casteau Dauzonne’ as early as 1592, providing ancient evidence of the site’s occupation and its limestone quarries. The Vauthier family acquired Ausone in 1690 and has ensured its continuity within the family ever since. The estate is now run by the eleventh generation of this family of winegrowers. Its vineyard covers 7 hectares of small terraces situated on a rocky promontory in Saint-Émilion. The plots are planted on soils of asterian limestone and clay-limestone. Cabernet Franc predominates, alongside Merlot; some vines are over a century old. Alain Vauthier and his eldest daughter, Pauline, are currently involved in the winemaking process. Philippe Baillarguet, cellar master at Château Ausone since 1997, is also in charge of the cellar for Ausone at Vignobles Vauthier. The wines are aged in the estate’s limestone quarries.

After revealing some amber at the edge as well as copious aromas of fruitcake, crushed rocks, incense, and a weedy character, the 1990 Ausone offers up sweet, jammy fruit notes as well as a firm finish with the tell-tale crushed rock minerality that this estate often achieves. The aromatics suggest a fully mature wine, but in the mouth, the firm structure and density indicate this effort needs more time. This wine gives off mixed signals, and I suspect it will last much longer than it appears, but only time will tell. There is a lot to like here, but the 1990 is not one of the most profound Ausones, such as those made since 1998. Owners should try a bottle and make up their own minds, but I think it has another 10- to 15-year window of maximum pleasure. Release price: ($3500.00/case)

Wine Spectator 92/100

Chewy, monolithic wine. Aromas of dried herbs and berries. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a tar, tobacco aftertaste. Puckers your mouth with tannins. Will improve with age.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2005. 2,150 cases made. Published on August 31, 2000

Mid-crimson with ruby rim. Toasty, appetising nose with some vigour. Very elegant wine with a certain noblesse and certainly some tannins for the future. But not all-enveloping class. Quite rigid tannins for the amount of fruit.
