Pères Chartreux
The Carthusian Fathers produce Chartreuse liqueurs, whose recipes are kept within the Order and implemented today at the Aiguenoire distillery in Isère. The old Tarragona Chartreuses correspond to the Spanish production maintained by the monks from 1904 to 1989, notably during and after their period of expulsion from France.

Histoire du domaine
The history of the Pères Chartreux liqueurs finds its starting point in 1605, with the presentation to the religious order of a manuscript containing a complex plant-based formula. After lengthy research, the Élixir Végétal was finalized in 1764; Chartreuse Verte and Chartreuse Jaune took their commercial form in the 19th century, driven notably by Father Procurator Dom Louis Garnier, who registered a first trademark in 1852 and then registered it in 1869. Manufacturing was transferred from the monastery of the Grande Chartreuse to Fourvoirie in 1864. Expelled from France in April 1903, the Carthusians organized their retreat to Tarragona, in a former Spanish factory acquired by the Order about twenty years earlier. They resumed production there in 1904 under an identity distinguishing their bottles from the products of the Compagnie Fermière operated in France; the reputation of the mention "Liqueur fabriquée à Tarragone par les Pères Chartreux" makes it possible to identify this authentic production. The monks gradually recovered their rights abroad, and in 1929 took back the brand and their French assets within the Compagnie française de la Grande Chartreuse. Although the monks present in Spain left Tarragona in 1933, distillation was maintained there until 1989; the site was notably bombed during the Spanish Civil War in 1938. In France, production returned to Fourvoirie, then was moved to Voiron after the landslide of 1935. Chartreuse Diffusion was created in 1970 to ensure marketing and communication. Upon the closure of Tarragona in 1989, the Carthusians repatriated an important stock of old bottles to France. Since 2018, the liqueurs are produced in Aiguenoire, in Entre-deux-Guiers. The Order remains the owner of the brand and retains control over the recipes; total production, voluntarily capped, is commonly cited at around 1.6 million bottles per year.
