Histoire du domaine
Philippe Clicquot, from a Reims-based family of bankers and textile merchants, founded a wine merchant’s business in 1772 under the name Clicquot. Following the death of his son François in 1805, his widow Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin took over the running of the business at the age of 27. Under her leadership, the House played a part in marketing the first vintage champagnes, particularly from 1810 onwards. In 1814, she managed to ship 10,550 bottles to Saint Petersburg despite the blockade, helping to establish the brand in Russia. In 1816, she developed the riddling rack designed to clarify sparkling wines. Two years later, the House produced a rosé champagne by blending it with red wine. The yellow label, which has become its hallmark, was registered in 1877. Veuve Clicquot acquired its chalk cellars in Reims in 1909. The ‘La Grande Dame’ cuvée was launched in 1972 to mark the House’s bicentenary. In 1986, Veuve Clicquot joined the Louis Vuitton Group, and subsequently became part of the LVMH group, which was formed in 1987. The House is now owned by LVMH, and Didier Mariotti has been its eleventh cellar master since 2019.
