Histoire du domaine
Royal Tokaji was founded in 1990, in the wake of the communist period, by the British writer Hugh Johnson, a group of investors, and local winemakers united around the project of restoring the prestige of the great wines of Tokaj. The company became a private enterprise in 1993 and distinguished itself from its beginnings by producing Aszú from identified parcels, notably Szent Tamás, Nyulászó, and Betsek in Mád, as well as Mézes Mály in Tarcal, classified among the two historic "Great First Growths" of Tokaj. During its first decade, from 1990 to 1999, Royal Tokaji devoted itself exclusively to Aszú wines before expanding its range to dry and late harvest wines. Damon de Laszlo, through Foinavon, is the current owner. In 2010, for its twentieth anniversary, the estate inaugurated a new facility in Mád designed by the Hungarian architect Csaba Bodonyi. The management of the estate and cellar is overseen by Zoltán Kovács, while Máté Varga, who joined the team in 2022, is the current winemaker.
