Histoire du domaine
The Rossignol family has been involved in winemaking in Volnay since the 16th century, with the trade passed down from father to son. The estate took the legal form of EARL Michel & Marc Rossignol in 1996. Michel Rossignol served as manager, while Marc Rossignol acted as co-manager starting in January 2005. On November 21, 2006, Marc succeeded Michel as manager of the estate. Located at 2 rue de l'Abreuvoir in Volnay, the estate currently farms five hectares; it practices manual harvesting and handles barrel aging, wine monitoring, and bottling directly at the property.
Les Pitures
The site corresponds to the climat officially named "Pitures Dessus", often commercially abbreviated as "Les Pitures" or "Pitures". It is located mid-slope, near the village of Volnay in the direction of Pommard, and adjoins the Clos des Ducs. Its clay-limestone and marly soil shows variations between hard limestone and marly limestone; granular facies of the Calcaire de Nantoux, locally dolomitized, are reported in this sector. The climat produces exclusively red Volnay Premier Cru.
- Vineyard commune
- Volnay
- Origin of the vineyard name
- Attested as "En la Peture" in 1507, the name evokes, through an expressive root PIT-/PET-/PAT-, a soil that becomes pasty and sticky with water.
- Soil
- Clay-limestone soil, relatively cool, combining clay, hard limestone, and marly limestone.
- Subsoil and geology
- Limestones and marls; granular facies of the Calcaire de Nantoux, locally dolomitized in the Pitures Dessus sector.
Histoire de la parcelle
The site has been documented since 1507 under the name "En la Peture" in the land register of the royal domain, formerly a ducal domain, of Beaune, Pommard, and Volnay. The Archives Départementales de la Côte-d’Or explicitly identify this historical denomination with the current climat Pitures Dessus. The site is now listed among the climats of Volnay officially classified as Premier Cru.
