Histoire du domaine
The history of the Ricasoli family at Brolio dates back to 1141, when their holdings in Chianti were first documented. From the 17th century onwards, the family placed increasing emphasis on the agricultural management of their lands and the production of wine. In the 19th century, Bettino Ricasoli, known as the ‘Iron Baron’, conducted viticultural and oenological research at Brolio alongside his political career. His work helped to define the traditional blend of Chianti; a letter from 1872 sets out, in particular, the proportions of the grape varieties. After the Second World War, the name Castello di Brolio was sold to Seagram, whilst the family retained management of its land and sold its produce to that company. Francesco Ricasoli took over the running of the family business in 1993. He then embarked on a programme to renew the vineyards and map the soils of Brolio. The estate is now owned by Francesco Ricasoli; Massimiliano Biagi, technical director and agronomist, oversees operations in the vineyard and cellars.
