Domain Rousseau Clos St Jacques 1995

The 1995 Domaine Rousseau Clos Saint-Jacques is a red wine from Gevrey-Chambertin, classified as a Burgundy Premier Cru and made from 100% Pinot Noir. This cuvée comes from the Clos Saint-Jacques climat, of which Domaine Armand Rousseau farms 2.21 hectares, accounting for about a third of the total surface area. Facing south-east, the parcel also benefits from the coolness of the Combe de Lavaux. Its stony terroir combines marl and limestone depending on the sectors of the clos. The estate describes an wine of intensity, structured by firm yet integrated tannins, with notes of blackcurrant and small dark berries.

Histoire du domaine

Armand Rousseau acquired his first vineyard plots in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1902, upon coming of age. Born into a family with links to viticulture, cooperage and wine trading, he gradually built up the estate in the early 20th century. Following his marriage in 1909, he expanded his wine-growing holdings. In particular, the estate acquired vineyards in Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche. Armand Rousseau also developed the estate’s own bottling operations during the interwar period. In 1954, the Clos Saint-Jacques Premier Cru was acquired in the name of his son Charles. Following Armand Rousseau’s accidental death in 1959, Charles took over the estate, which at that time comprised six hectares, and continued to develop it. Éric Rousseau joined his father in 1982 after studying oenology, and subsequently took over the running of the estate. Today, he manages it alongside his daughter Cyrielle, who represents the fourth generation of the family.

Parcelle & terroir

Clos Saint-Jacques

Clos Saint-Jacques is a climat officially classified as a Premier Cru of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, located on the Côte Saint-Jacques to the northwest of the village and near the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux. The southeast-facing hillside ranges approximately from 290 to 340 meters in altitude, with a steep slope in its upper two-thirds and a much gentler slope in the lower part. The terroir features a succession of stony clay-limestone soils and different Jurassic formations depending on the position on the slope. It is a true walled enclosure (clos), and not a monopole.

Histoire de la parcelle

In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified Saint-Jacques and Clos Saint-Jacques among the top cuvées of Gevrey. On February 2, 1931, the court of Dijon recognized the precisely cadastered plots of the site as having the right to the designation of origin "Saint-Jacques" or "Clos Saint-Jacques", while rejecting the name "Clos Saint-Jacques-Chambertin". During the organization of the Burgundian AOCs, the climat was integrated into the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation and classified as Premier Cru; this classification remains the officially recognized one.
