Histoire du domaine

Jacques Seysses founded Domaine Dujac in 1968 after learning the art of winemaking from Gérard Potel at the Domaine de la Pousse d’Or in Volnay during the 1966 and 1967 harvests. He then acquired the Domaine Graillet in Morey-Saint-Denis and renamed it Dujac, a name derived from ‘du Jacques’. His wife Rosalind joined him in this venture after their marriage in 1973 and helped develop the estate. The vineyard, which initially covered around 5 hectares, expanded to 11 hectares in 1977 and then to 15.5 hectares in 2005 following a series of acquisitions. In 1998, their son Jeremy joined the estate, followed by Diana Snowden, who became his wife, in 2001, and then by his brother Alec in 2003. Jacques Seysses handed over the running of the estate to Jeremy and Alec in 2007, whilst Diana Snowden Seysses took charge of the winery. In 2011, the estate obtained organic farming certification. In 2014, it took on the lease of vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet, notably in the Premier Cru vineyards Les Folatières and Les Combettes. The estate now cultivates 17.5 hectares and remains owned by the Seysses family.

Parcelle & terroir

Bonnes-Mares

Bonnes-Mares is a physically delineated Grand Cru of the Côte de Nuits, split between Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, with the largest portion located in Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard forms approximately a rectangle south of Clos de Tart, on a gently sloping hillside with an easterly exposure. The light, gravelly, brown to reddish soils containing clay with flint rest on Jurassic limestone and white marl.

Vineyard commune
Chambolle-Musigny (principalement) et Morey-Saint-Denis
Origin of the vineyard name
Name attested since the late Middle Ages, of uncertain etymology. The BIVB favors the hypothesis of the old verb "marer", meaning to cultivate with care, rather than a reference to mother goddesses.
Exposure

Slope

Soil
Light and gravelly soil, brown or reddish, predominantly clayey with flint, approximately 40 cm deep.
Subsoil and geology

The 2011 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a vivacious, ripe, blackberry and blueberry- scented bouquet with impressive delineation and mineralite. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening, exhibiting superior concentration and suppleness compared to the Clos Saint Denis or Clos de la Roche and seems to revel in the vintage better. It does not quite have the length of a tiptop Bonnes-Mares, but it should age well in the context of the vintage. Drink 2015-2025. I have been visiting Jeremy and Alec Seysses at Domaine Dujac for several years now, and it is always one of my favorite ports of call. Alec, looking surprisingly chipper for a new dad had taken time off nappy duty to guide me through the 2011s this year. I have to confess that I was concerned by the conspicuous nature of the new oak on both their negociant label wines and the entry Village Crus. I felt that 35% new oak tended to overwhelm the fruit and terroir and occasionally impart drying finishes, which is why my scores are parsimonious here. As I tasted through the range toward the flock of Grand Crus the oak seemed better assimilated, although I would still maintain that the wine is of such quality that the present level of oak risks being superfluous to requirements. All the negociant label wines were bottled before Christmas. Importers: The Sorting Table, Napa, CA; tel. (415) 491-4724; Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants, San Francisco, CA; tel. (415) 642-5500

Bright garnet – looks very healthy! Reticent nose. Focused and tight. All promise rather than delivery. Still a bit fossilised. ‘Come back in 10 years’ time’, it seems to be saying, although all the ingredients are there. Mouth-filling with well-judged fruit that’s still embryonic.
