Histoire du domaine

Charles Mortet founded the family estate in 1956 in Gevrey-Chambertin with one hectare of vines. His son Denis joined the estate in 1978 with his wife Laurence. In 1992, Denis Mortet parted ways with his brother Thierry and took over part of the family estate, which at that time comprised around 4.5 hectares in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot. In 1993, Denis and Laurence acquired a four-hectare estate comprising, in particular, vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin – including a plot in Lavaux Saint-Jacques – as well as in Marsannay. The vineyard was subsequently expanded through acquisitions in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1997, in Chambertin in 1999, and then through further plots in 2000. Following the death of Denis Mortet in 2006, Laurence Mortet and their son Arnaud ensured the estate’s continuity; Clémence joined them in 2013. Arnaud Mortet, who has been working in the vineyards since 2000, oversees the estate’s winemaking. Plots in Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin were acquired in 2011, followed by plots in Bonnes-Mares and Mazis-Chambertin in 2014. In 2016, Arnaud and Clémence Mortet simultaneously developed a separate venture under the Arnaud Mortet label, using a further four hectares; these vineyards are not included in the 12-hectare estate of Domaine Denis Mortet.

Parcelle & terroir

Chambertin

Chambertin is both a physically demarcated climat in Gevrey-Chambertin and the eponymous terroir of a Grand Cru appellation reserved for red wines. It occupies the middle of the slope, with an easterly exposure and a relatively moderate gradient compared to the neighboring Clos de Bèze. Its shallow, stony calcareous brown soils overlie entroquitic limestones and Bajocian marls, with a Bathonian component in the upper part.

Histoire de la parcelle

The name Chambertin has been known since the 13th century, and its winegrowing potential has been recognized for centuries. Thomas Jefferson cited it among his favorite wines in 1787, while Napoleon I's predilection for this wine contributed to its renown. In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified it as "Tête de cuvée, cru hors ligne, vin extra". On October 17, 1847, its name was joined to that of Gevrey to form Gevrey-Chambertin; the Chambertin appellation was officially recognized on July 31, 1937.

Tasted at the Denis Mortet Chambertin vertical, the 2010 Chambertin Grand Cru is probably the finest wine that Arnaud Mortet has overseen...thus far! It has a very complex bouquet with initially rather broody black fruit, briary and dried blood scents, cranberry and black truffle developing further on with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin that frame such pure black and red fruit. There is a sorbet-fresh attack to this Chambertin, great tension with superb mineralité on the finish. This is an outstanding Chambertin with a long future ahead. Tasted January 2016.
