Domain Comte De Vogue Musigny Grand Cru Blanc 1959

The 1959 Domaine Comte de Vogüé Musigny Grand Cru Blanc is a white Burgundy wine from the Chambolle-Musigny appellation and the Musigny plot. Classified as a Burgundy Grand Cru, it is crafted from 100% old-vine Chardonnay. Jancis Robinson awards it 18.5/20 and indicated a drinking window from 1980 to 2010. The critic describes a bouquet of violet, a taut and delicate expression, as well as an already perceptible bottle evolution.

Histoire du domaine

The origins of Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé date back to 1450, when the estate’s historic building was established in Chambolle-Musigny. The property has remained in the same family throughout the centuries, including during the French Revolution. The name Vogüé became associated with the estate in 1766, following the marriage of Catherine Bouhier de Versalieu to Cerice François Melchior de Vogüé. In 1925, Count Georges de Vogüé inherited the vineyards from his father, Count Arthur de Vogüé, and gave the estate his name. He managed the estate for over fifty years. His granddaughters, Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, inherited the vineyards from their mother in 2002 and are the current owners. François Millet was responsible for winemaking from 1986 to 2021. Jean Lupatelli succeeded him in spring 2021 as winemaker and cellar master; his responsibilities were subsequently expanded to include the estate’s operational and commercial management. The estate’s vineyard comprises, in particular, 7.12 hectares in Musigny and 2.66 hectares in Bonnes-Mares.

Parcelle & terroir

Musigny [Blanc]

Musigny blanc is not an autonomous cadastral climat, but the Chardonnay-planted part of the delimited terroir of the Grand Cru Musigny appellation. This white vineyard is located in the upper part of the Musigny hillside and represents the white singularity of this Grand Cru, which is predominantly planted with Pinot Noir. The Musigny terroir officially includes the lieux-dits La Combe d'Orveau, Les Musigny, and Les Petits Musigny, though the consulted institutional sources do not make it possible to attribute the white parcel with certainty to any of them nor to specify its pedological characteristics separately.

Histoire de la parcelle

The boundaries of the Musigny terroir were defined by a judgment on April 16, 1929, prior to the recognition of the appellation d'origine contrôlée on September 11, 1936. The BIVB indicates that the Domaine de Vogüé family planted 0.66 hectares of Chardonnay there; this planting constitutes the part that yields Musigny blanc. However, the available institutional topographical and geological data describe the entirety of the Grand Cru Musigny, rather than just this white portion.

Served in isolation, this would probably have bedazzled but it was just slightly outshone by the more youthful and fuller 1964. The nose was redolent of violets but suggested the wine might be a little tarter than the 1964. Fragile and this bottle was obviously ageing. Just a little fragile but utterly admirable .
