Histoire du domaine
The lands of Bages are first mentioned as early as the 16th century, and the Domaine de Bages was gradually established by the Déjean families. In 1728, Pierre Déjean and his son Bernard sold the estate to Pierre Drouillard, Treasurer-General of Guyenne. Thomas Lynch acquired the estate in 1750 following his marriage to Pierre Drouillard’s daughter. His son, Michel Lynch, expanded the estate, notably through drainage works and the selection of grape varieties. The estate remained in the Lynch family for around seventy-five years, retaining the family name. It was classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification. In the 19th century, under the ownership of the Cayrou family and with the advice of Pierre Skawinski, the estate adopted a gravity-fed wine-making system. In the 1930s, General Félix de Vial leased Lynch-Bages to Jean-Charles Cazes, who acquired the property in 1939. André Cazes subsequently revitalised and expanded the vineyard from the 1960s onwards, whilst Jean-Michel Cazes modernised the facilities from 1975 and developed the estate’s international presence. Jean-Charles Cazes took over the family estates in 2007; the renovated winery, designed in collaboration with architect Chien Chung Pei, welcomed its first vintage to be vinified with the 2020 vintage.
