Histoire du domaine

The château’s archives identify Mr de Guiraud, a councillor at the Parliament of Bordeaux, as the estate’s first documented owner. Passed down through family alliances, the property was notably known as Grand-Puy-Saint-Guirons. In the 19th century, the marriage of Marie-Jeanne de Saint-Guirons to François Lacoste led to the adoption of the name Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Their son, Pierre-Frédéric Lacoste, inherited the estate after 1844, had the château rebuilt in 1855 and saw the property included in the Médoc’s Grands Crus Classés classification that same year. In 1926, Pierre-Frédéric Lacoste’s grandsons sold the estate to Messrs Heriveau and Neel. Raymond Dupin acquired it in 1932 and retained ownership until 1978. That year, Jean-Eugène Borie bought Grand-Puy-Lacoste and immediately entrusted its management to his son, François-Xavier. François-Xavier Borie then undertook the replanting of the necessary areas, improvements to drainage and trellising, as well as a gradual modernisation of the facilities. A new fermentation vat was built in 1981, followed by the gradual renewal or expansion of the grape reception facilities and cellars. Since 2003, Domaines François-Xavier Borie has owned Grand-Puy-Lacoste; the children of François-Xavier and Marie-Hélène Borie are also co-owners. Benoît Estassy is now the cellar master, alongside Christel Spinner, R&D director and oenologist, and Antonio Flores, vineyard manager.

The most pleasurable aspect of this wine is the bouquet of cassis and weedy scents. In the mouth, the wine is hard, tannic, and lacking charm and flesh. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 4/90.
