Château Batailley

Château Batailley is a wine estate in Pauillac, classified as a Fifth Grand Cru in the 1855 classification. Its 60-hectare vineyard is situated in the south-west of the appellation, on ancient gravelly soils. The château belongs to the Castéja family, which has been linked to the Borie-Manoux estate since the Borie brothers acquired the property in 1924.

Histoire du domaine

The Batailley estate was gradually established between the 16th and 18th centuries. Records from the 18th century show the property was owned by the Saint-Martin family of Pauillac, after which a portion passed to the wine merchant Guillaume Pécholier in 1791. Daniel Guestier acquired the estate in 1816, expanded the vineyard and facilities, and the property was classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855. After Daniel Guestier, his son succeeded him in 1847, and the banker Constant Halphen became the owner in 1866. The brothers Marcel and Francis Borie, then co-managers of the Borie-Manoux firm, purchased Château Batailley in 1924. When the two branches of the Borie family went their separate ways in the 1940s, part of the vineyard became Château Haut-Batailley, whilst Château Batailley passed to Marcel Borie. In 1961, Émile Castéja, Marcel Borie’s son-in-law, took over the estate and ensured its continuity within the Castéja family. Philippe Castéja has been managing the château since the 2000s, with the support of his son Frédéric Castéja. Since March 2023, Hugues Mathieu has been the cellar master and head of winemaking.

Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 1982 Batailley continues to perform well despite never really being the "go-to" Pauillac in this vintage. This might be the best of a dozen or so bottles that I have tasted over the years. The nose here is the most intense that I have encountered, with pencil shavings infusing the black fruit and cedar and a savory touch that becomes more pronounced as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, a classic Bordeaux here with good structure and a bullish, tobacco-tinged finish that is conservative but does the job. It cuts away a little too swiftly, but there is just enough dryness to keep you returning for another sip. I can see this continuing on its plateau over the next 15-20 years; and, while it will never challenge the likes of Latour or Pichon-Lalande, it will satisfy a great number of wine lovers. Tasted April 2016.
