Histoire du domaine
Francis Usseglio left Piedmont in 1931 to settle in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where he initially worked as a vineyard labourer. In 1948, he acquired eight hectares of vineyards on a sharecropping basis and began producing his own wine. His first harvest was pressed in 1949. His son Pierre succeeded him and gradually expanded the family estate. According to the Guide Hachette, Pierre passed the estate on to his sons Jean-Pierre and Thierry in 1990. They now run the estate and oversee the winemaking. The estate has expanded beyond Châteauneuf-du-Pape to include vineyards in Lirac, Côtes-du-Rhône and Vin de France. The estate’s website states that a fourth generation – notably Grégory, Maxime and Thibault Usseglio – is now involved in the family business.
Cuvée de mon Aïeul
Châteauneuf-du-Pape red crafted from Grenache sourced from old vines selected across several parcels, notably La Crau, Les Bédines, and Les Serres. The cuvée favors fruit purity and concentration, with aging primarily in concrete tanks.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- Hommage à Francis Usseglio, founder of the estate and grandfather of Thierry and Jean-Pierre Usseglio.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1998
- Style of the cuvée
- A concentrated, powerful, and structured wine, retaining a pure expression of Grenache, a silky texture, and an elegance built for aging.
- Position within the range
- High-end selection of old Grenaches, distinct from the estate's traditional Châteauneuf-du-Pape red.
Histoire de la cuvée
Created in 1998, the cuvée was born after Thierry and Jean-Pierre Usseglio tasted Grenache from a very old vineyard. It pays tribute to their grandfather Francis Usseglio, the founder of the family estate.
