Histoire du domaine
The Gérin family has been established in Ampuis for six generations. Jean-Michel Gérin founded the estate in 1983 following the purchase of a plot in Côte-Rôtie, then produced his first bottle in 1987 after taking over the family vines of his grandfather Marcel and his father Alfred. In 1988, he carried out the first separate vinification of the lieu-dit Les Grandes Places; La Landonne followed in 1996. A fermentation vat room and barrel cellar were built in the early 1990s, followed by a bottle storage building in 2000. The planting of La Viallière began in 2003 on slopes reaching nearly 60%, before the release of the first bottles in 2009. A new winemaking facility was built in 2014, and Côte-Bodin was isolated for the first time in 2018. The conversion of the entire vineyard to organic farming was initiated in 2020, with certification acquired starting from the 2023 vintage. Michaël and Alexis Gérin, sons of the founder, currently manage the estate.
Champin Le Seigneur
Champin le Seigneur is a red Côte-Rôtie produced by Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin. It blends several parcels and terroirs of the appellation, located mainly in its northern part, rather than representing a single parcel vinification. The Syrah is traditionally complemented by a small proportion of Viognier.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1987
- Style of the cuvée
- A structured and deep Côte-Rôtie, combining fruit, spice, and floral expression, with a generally silky texture. Its blend of multiple terroirs gives it a more accessible profile that is representative of the estate compared to the single-parcel cuvées.
- Position within the range
- An entry-level and benchmark cuvée among the estate's Côte-Rôtie wines, positioned before the single-parcel selections.
Histoire de la cuvée
Presented as the estate's very first cuvée, Champin le Seigneur is tied to the first bottling carried out in 1987 after taking over the family vineyards of Marcel and Alfred Gerin. It was subsequently joined in the range by several cuvées originating from individually vinified lieux-dits.
