Histoire du domaine
The history of Domaine Henri Gouges began in 1919, when Henri Gouges (1889–1967) acquired his first plots in Nuits-Saint-Georges, against a backdrop of falling prices in the wake of the First World War. He subsequently expanded the vineyard through a series of acquisitions, notably at Les Saint-Georges in 1924, Les Vaucrains in 1932 and Le Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges in 1933, which became the estate’s exclusive holding. Henri Gouges was one of the pioneers of estate bottling in Burgundy, a practice he adopted as early as 1929, according to the estate. He was also involved in championing Burgundian appellations and sat on the executive committee of the INAO. In 1930, he identified a white mutation on a Pinot Noir vine, which gave rise to the Pinot Gouges. His sons Marcel and Michel joined him in 1940 and set about replanting the vineyard. From the 1980s onwards, Pierre and Christian Gouges modernised viticultural practices and the winemaking facilities. Grégory Gouges joined the estate in 2003, followed by his cousin Antoine in 2011. The estate is now run by these two representatives of the fourth generation, and its vineyard is cultivated according to the principles of organic farming.
