Domaine Raveneau

Domaine François Raveneau is a family-run estate based in Chablis, in the Yonne department, dedicated to Chardonnay. Histoire du domaine

The estate traces its origins back to 1948, when François Raveneau married Andrée Dauvissat and brought together the vineyards of both families. At that time, the couple practised mixed farming, as did many families in Chablis. François Raveneau became the first member of his family to produce and bottle his own wines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the estate expanded, against a backdrop of technical advances that, in particular, provided better protection against spring frosts. François Raveneau then devoted himself entirely to viticulture and acquired plots of land, including some in the Chablis grands crus. His son Jean-Marie joined the estate in 1978 after completing his studies. Bernard Raveneau, after gaining experience in the Burgundian wine trade, in turn joined his brother in 1995, when François retired. Isabelle Raveneau joined the estate in 2010, followed by Maxime Raveneau in 2017. Isabelle and Maxime Raveneau now run the family estate; Isabelle is responsible for winemaking, within an organisation where family members also help with work in the cellar and the vineyards. The estate vinifies grapes from its own vineyards and harvests them by hand; the wines are aged in barrels before bottling.

Montmains

Montmains is a flagship Chablis Premier Cru climat located on the left bank of the Serein river, in the commune of Chablis. The designation can cover Montmains proper as well as the Forêts and Butteaux climats, the whole representing approximately 118 hectares. Long and oriented from southeast to northeast, the site mainly receives morning sun and remains relatively cool due to its exposure to winds, which favors often late harvests. The cadastral origin of Montmains proper corresponds to the lieu-dit Les Monts Mains, section E1 of Chablis.

Histoire de la parcelle

Early spellings such as 'Montméen' and 'Montmoyen' are attested as early as 1537. Montmains officially appears among the climat names classified as premier cru of the AOC Chablis and also serves as an authorized umbrella name for parcels belonging to Forêts and Butteaux.

Raveneau’s 2008 Chablis Montmains – a cru he chose this year to ferment as well as mature in barrel – smells of white and pink grapefruit zest and brown spices, along with a 1996-reminiscent note of white truffle. An oily feel and spiciness reinforced by a hint of oak complement its bittersweet citrus oil flavors, and the texture here is quite plush for the vintage. But there is also a refreshing core of primary lemon and grapefruit juiciness, and this finishes with an impressive sense of energy and penetration. It would best be given 2-3 years in bottle and should show well for at least 8-10. Bernard Raveneau had been among those growers most bursting with enthusiasm about his 2008s when I had visited the following April, likening them to 1996s but with effusively floral and high-toned herbal aromatics such as he said he had never experienced in his young wines. As with the 2007s (and compared with 2009s that Raveneau expected to give shorter elevage), the collection here was bottled largely in late spring and early summer, only two wines having been bottled when I tasted them this April. (The others were in tank or pre-assembled for me.) But it was already clear by then that this collection has justified its author’s initial excitement and confidence.
