Histoire du domaine

According to the estate’s account, the site’s wine-growing history dates back to Charlemagne’s donation of Corton vineyards to Saulieu Abbey in 775. The ecclesiastical estates were sold as national property in 1791; the vineyards were then acquired by François Ray, and subsequently by Simon Very. In 1835, Marie-Eugénie Very, daughter of Simon Very, married Charles Bonneau du Martray; her dowry included vineyards in Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton and Volnay. Their son, Marie-Eugène Bonneau du Martray, preserved the integrity of the estate through the phylloxera crisis and the conflicts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. René Bonneau du Martray, born in 1886, subsequently passed the estate on to his niece, Alice Colonna de Giovellina, wife of Jean le Bault de la Morinière. Jean le Bault de la Morinière joined the estate in 1969 and undertook, in particular, work to combat erosion and to regulate temperatures in the cellars. His son, Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, joined the estate in 1994 and gradually began the transition to organic farming from 1997, followed by a move to biodynamic farming from 2004. The estate states that this conversion was completed in 2011. E. Stanley Kroenke became the owner of the estate in 2017. Thibault Jacquet is in charge of management, whilst Emmanuel Hautus has been responsible for winemaking since 2011.

Parcelle & terroir

Corton [Rouge]

Corton is both a Grand Cru appellation and a physically delimited terroir on the slopes of the Montagne de Corton, in the north of the Côte de Beaune. It does not constitute a single climat: red Corton can be followed by the name of one of the 24 climats authorized by the product specification. The plots are staggered across several slopes, with exposures ranging from east to south and then west, which explains a significant diversity of soils and characters. The area of 87.04 ha corresponds to the surface area in production declared as red in 2022, and not to the area of a single cadastral climat.

Subsoil and geology
Jurassic sedimentary formations: Dalle nacrée limestones and colluvium in the lower part, then clayey limestones and Upper Jurassic marls rich in silica, with chert, fine sands and silts; summit cornice of hard limestone.

Histoire de la parcelle

The presence of vines on the Montagne de Corton is attested as early as the early Middle Ages, notably through the donation of vineyards made in 775 by Charlemagne to the collegiate church of Saulieu. In the 12th century, the Abbey of Cîteaux owned an estate in Aloxe comprising vineyards in Clos de Courthon, while the Dukes of Burgundy held the future Clos du Roi. In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified Corton among the "out-of-line wines"; the commune of Aloxe added the name of the cru to its own in 1862. The Corton appellation d'origine contrôlée was recognized on July 31, 1937, and its parcel area was notably approved by the INAO on September 20, 1984.

This was straightforward and had reasonable weight and ripeness but was just a bit simple and dull.
