Histoire du domaine

The origins of the Moussas-Bages estate date back to 1610, when it belonged to the de Jehan family. It was acquired in 1728 by the Drouillard family. In 1748, Thomas Lynch inherited it through his wife, Élisabeth Drouillard, and renamed it Château Lynch. Jean-Baptiste Lynch inherited the property in 1779 and entrusted its management to his brother Michel Lynch. On the death of Jean-Baptiste Lynch in 1835, the estate was divided between Lynch-Moussas, in the hamlet of Moussas, and Lynch-Bages, situated in Bages; Lynch-Moussas retained the château. The Vasquez family, Spanish wine merchants, acquired Lynch-Moussas in 1847, and the estate was classified as a Médoc Fifth Growth in 1855. Jean Castéja added it to the family estate in 1919. In 1970, Émile Castéja took over the property, whose vineyard had shrunk to less than ten hectares, and oversaw its replanting to 60 hectares whilst modernising the facilities. Philippe Castéja has been managing the family estates since 2001; that same year saw the creation of the second wine, Les Hauts de Lynch-Moussas. Hugues Mathieu joined the château in March 2023 as cellar master and head of winemaking.

The 2005 Lynch-Moussas is a supple, fruit-driven wine from the Castéja family. It shows well, with ripe tannin, some blackcurrants, spice and earth. This medium-bodied wine should drink well for another 15 or more years.

Tasted blind. Dark ruby. Luscious, round and a tad fragile. Very lively and transparent as opposed to dense. Already approachable.
