Histoire du domaine

The history of the Barton family in Bordeaux begins with Thomas Barton, who left Ireland in 1722 and settled in Bordeaux in 1725, where he founded a wine merchant’s firm. His grandson, Hugh Barton, expanded the family’s wine trading business. After acquiring Château Langoa in 1821, Hugh Barton purchased part of the former Léoville estate in 1826, which then took the name Château Léoville Barton. The château was classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Médoc wine classification. In the 20th century, Ronald Barton took over the management of the family’s Saint-Julien estates from 1924. Having left France in 1940, he returned to the estate in 1945 and set about restoring the vineyards, which had been damaged by the war. Having no children, he passed the estates on to his nephew Anthony Barton in 1983. Anthony Barton subsequently contributed to the commercial development and international reputation of Léoville Barton. The estate is still owned by the Barton family today, under the chairmanship of Lilian Barton Sartorius, with her children Mélanie and Damien also involved. François Bréhant is the technical director and has direct responsibility for winemaking, working alongside the consultant oenologist Eric Boissenot on the blends.

It has been a little while since I tasted the Château Léoville-Barton 1989. Now at 25 years of age, it has an open bouquet with vestiges of brambly red fruit, scorched earth and chestnut, touches of fireside hearth developing with time. There is something almost comforting about Anthony Barton's wine, its familiarity putting you at ease. The palate is medium-bodied with tannins that have softened in recent years and it gently builds to a saline, rather austere finish. Gentle, but classy Saint Julien, you can enjoy this for another 15 years without worry. Tasted June 2014.

A hint of boiled cabbage on the nose initially but that blew off to reveal a wine that's not yet at its peak. Very refined and round. Very Barton.
