Château Carbonnieux 1980

Château Carbonnieux 1980 is a Pessac-Léognan red wine produced by Château Carbonnieux and classified as a Cru Classé de Graves. Its blend combines 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Stemming from the estate's grand vin rouge, it is part of a parcel-by-parcel viticulture conducted on the gravels of Léognan. For this cuvée, the estate notes a slow, gentle extraction and a customary 14-month ageing in oak barrels, aimed at preserving roundness and tannin balance.

Histoire du domaine

The Bordeaux archives mention, in 1234, Ramon or Raimond Carbonnieu, sub-prior of Sainte-Croix Abbey and owner of vineyards in Léognan; a deed of exchange dated 1292 confirms the long-standing link between the site and the abbey. The Benedictines developed the estate’s initial infrastructure before abandoning the vineyard in the wake of the upheavals and crises of the late Middle Ages. In 1519, they sold the Carbonnieux estate to Jean de Ferron, whose family pursued a policy of acquisitions and land consolidation for over two centuries. Burdened by debt, the Ferron family sold the estate to the Benedictines of Sainte-Croix in 1740. Under their management, Dom Galéas developed the blending and bottling of white and red wines; the white wines of Carbonnieux were particularly noted in the 1776 classification by the Intendance de Guyenne. Sold as national property in January 1791, the estate was acquired by Élie de Bouchereau, whose family retained ownership for 87 years and, notably, built up a significant ampelographic collection there. Following the phylloxera crisis, Carbonnieux passed through the hands of several successive owners between 1878 and 1956. Marc Perrin purchased the château on 18 April 1956 and undertook the restoration of the buildings as well as a replanting programme. His son Antony subsequently modernised the facilities, including the construction of a new wine-making vat in 1990. Antony’s children, Éric, Christine and Philibert Perrin, have taken over the family business; since 2019, Andréa Perrin has served as oenologist and cellar master.
