Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Rouge 2004 Magnum (150cl)

The Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2004 is a red wine from the Rhône Valley produced by Château de Beaucastel, owned by Jean-Pierre and François Perrin. Its blend comprises 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, and 15% other permitted varieties. The vintage yielded a reduced production following the consequences of 2003 and nine consecutive days of strong Mistral winds; anticyclonic conditions subsequently protected the harvest from the rain. The Wine Advocate awards it 94/100, with a tasting window of 2014–2029; Wine Spectator rates it 96/100, to be drunk between 2008 and 2027; Jancis Robinson awards it 17,5/20 for 2016–2026. Critics describe a dense and structured wine, combining black fruits, earthy notes, smoked meat, licorice, and a balsamic backbone.

Histoire du domaine

The first records of the estate date back to 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel acquired a barn and land at a place known as Coudoulet. A manor house was subsequently built on the estate. In 1687, a descendant of the same name was appointed by Louis XIV as captain of the town of Courthézon. After several centuries in existence, the estate was acquired in 1909 by Pierre Tramier. He subsequently passed Beaucastel on to his son-in-law, Pierre Perrin, who helped to modernise it. Jacques Perrin continued to develop the estate until 1978. His sons, Jean-Pierre and François Perrin, then took over. The fifth generation of the Perrin family is now involved in running the estate. The Beaucastel vineyard covers 130 hectares, 100 of which are situated within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. A new winery, spearheaded by the fifth generation, was inaugurated in May 2025.

Showing brilliantly, with a deep, rich and layered profile, the straight 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape has gorgeous black cherry, earth, underbrush and background meatiness that gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated and pure feel on the palate. A foudre-aged blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, with the balance a mix of the other permitted varieties, this knockout Chateauneuf du Pape will have another 10-15 years of prime drinking. Both of Beaucastel’s 2004s are some of the most youthful and structured in the vintage.

A powerful, modern style, delivering a torrent of cassis and cocoa notes backed by a second wave of tar and fig paste. Densely structured from start to finish, with floral and mineral hints in the background. Pure and driven, this is steel-plated for the long haul. 60 percent Mourvèdre, with Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Best from 2008 through 2027. 500 cases made. Published on July 31, 2007

Still quite dark crimson. Strong balsamic notes – as though they were going all out for maximum ripeness in this era. Big and beefy. Quite chewy finish after meat extract and blackberries. But the finish is not exactly splendid.
