Histoire du domaine
Born in 1929, Edmond Vatan began working in the family vineyards in 1947. In 1960, he uprooted the old Sauvignon Blanc vines of Clos la Néore, left the land to rest for nine years, and then replanted the plot in 1969 using massal selection from preserved plant material. The estate formerly farmed several hectares in Chavignol, but Edmond Vatan notably sold his small Pinot Noir plot in 2003, ultimately keeping only Clos la Néore, a one-hectare plot on Monts Damnés. His daughter Anne, a trained archaeologist, participated in the 2006 and 2007 vinifications before producing the 2008 vintage alone and taking over the management of the estate. Edmond Vatan passed away on January 6, 2022, in Sancerre at the age of 92; Anne Vatan has since perpetuated this family production limited to a single cuvée.
Clos la Néore
Clos la Néore is the white Sancerre produced by Edmond and later Anne Vatan from an eponymous plot located in the heart of the Monts Damnés, in Chavignol. Crafted exclusively from the Sauvignon Blanc of this family clos, this single-plot cuvée is now the estate's sole wine.
- Style of the cuvée
- A terroir-driven white Sancerre, concentrated and structured, marked by a strong mineral expression, a balance between richness and freshness, and exceptional aging potential. The traditional and low-intervention vinification prioritizes the expression of Sauvignon Blanc and the terres blanches of the Monts Damnés.
- Position within the range
- The only wine currently produced by the estate and the property's iconic cuvée.
Histoire de la cuvée
The plot has belonged to the Vatan family for several generations. Edmond Vatan replanted his vines via massal selection in the late 1960s, after leaving the land fallow for several years. Anne Vatan-Foucault collaborated on the 2006 and 2007 vinifications, then crafted the 2008 vintage alone.
