Histoire du domaine

The history of the Romanée-Conti vineyard dates back to the Priory of Saint-Vivant, founded in the early 10th century, which owned land in Vosne during the Middle Ages. The future vineyard was known as the Cros des Cloux before being leased in perpetuity to Claude Cousin in 1584. It then passed to Jacques Venot in 1621, and subsequently to the de Croonembourg family; the name ‘Romanée’ first appears in historical records in 1651. In 1760, Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, acquired the Romanée, with which his name remains associated. The vineyard was confiscated during the French Revolution and subsequently sold at auction in 1794. Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet bought La Romanée-Conti in 1869 and merged it with other wine-growing estates he already owned. Following a series of family transfers, the Société Civile du Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was incorporated on 31 July 1942, when Henri Leroy acquired Jacques Chambon’s shares. The estate acquired La Tâche in 1933, vineyards in Montrachet in 1963, and became the tenant of Romanée-Saint-Vivant Marey-Monge in 1966, before the partners acquired it in 1984. It also took on a lease for 2.2746 hectares of Corton in 2008, then entered into a sharecropping arrangement for 2.9132 hectares of Corton-Charlemagne in 2018. Since 2021, the estate has been co-managed by Bertrand de Villaine and Perrine Fenal; Alexandre Bernier oversees the cellar and winemaking.

Grands Échezeaux (Vosne Romanée)

Les Grands Échezeaux form a physically distinct climat in Flagey-Echézeaux and a Grand Cru appellation producing exclusively red wines. The Grands Echezeaux 2011 was picked on 9 and 10 September at 25.33hl/ha. There is certainly more intensity and fruitiness on the nose compared to the Echezeaux. The aromatics here feel fuller, rounder and more harmonious that its sibling. As the wine remains in the glass there are subtle cassis notes that begin to emerge accompanied by over-ripe oranges. The palate is well balanced and fresh on the entry, with slightly powdery tannins. It is very harmonious with well-judged acidity and compared to the Echezeaux there is more weight and corpulence to counterbalance the strict structure. It gently builds, never losing its head mind you, towards a lightly spiced finish that fans out beautifully. This is a very accomplished rather than spectacular Grands Echezeaux. 923 cases produced. Bright crimson. Markedly more 'rural' on the nose than the Échezeaux. Almost farmyardy at first (the world's most cosseted farmyard?) and then extremely rich. Very firm – almost rigid – finish and no excess of charm at the moment but all tucked in for the future. A tad austere at the moment. Solid and set for the long term.
