Histoire du domaine

The Georges Lignier et Fils estate was founded in the early 20th century in Morey-Saint-Denis. Its founder, Georges Lignier, established a family-run estate in this village in the Côte de Nuits. His son Bernard succeeded him in 1949. In 1970, Georges Lignier – Bernard’s son and the founder’s grandson – took over the management of the estate. Benoît Stehly joined the estate in 2002 after studying viticulture and oenology. He took over its management in 2003 and now produces wine from all the estate’s appellations. The estate now covers 16 hectares across 50 plots, spread across 17 appellations, including four grands crus. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils and have an average age of over fifty years.

Parcelle & terroir

Charmes-Chambertin (Gevrey Chambertin)

Charmes-Chambertin is a red Grand Cru appellation and a physically demarcated terroir within the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin, comprising the lieux-dits Aux Charmes and Mazoyères. The vineyard occupies a slight piedmont bench, between 260 and 280 meters in altitude, at the mouth of the Combe Grisard. Its shallow, carbonated and well-draining soils combine limestone gravel, clays and red silts; the parcels of Aux Charmes face mostly east to east-northeast, while Mazoyères is oriented more towards the south. The demarcated area of Mazoyères-Chambertin coincides with that of Charmes-Chambertin, the latter name being commonly claimed.

Histoire de la parcelle

The reputation of the climats Aux Charmes and Mazoyères is attested as early as the 18th century. In 1855, Jules Lavalle classified them partly as first cuvée and partly as second cuvée. A 1931 ruling by the Dijon court sanctioned the addition of the name Chambertin and established the boundaries of the appellation d'origine; the AOC Charmes-Chambertin was subsequently recognized by decree on July 31, 1937. The parcel area currently specified in the product specification cahier des charges was approved by the INAO on May 17 and 18, 1984.
