Histoire du domaine

The origin of the name Certan dates back to ancient times, whilst the history of the wine estate is linked to the de May family, of Scottish origin, who are said to have founded it in the 16th century. The estate adopted the name Vieux Château Certan in 1745, a date also recognised by the appellation’s governing body as the year the vineyard was established. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner and had the château renovated; its general appearance has been preserved. Georges Thienpont and his wife Joséphine acquired the property in the spring of 1924. On the death of Georges Thienpont in 1962, his son Léon took over the running of the estate. A significant portion of the vineyard was replanted following the frost of 1956, and a new winery was built in 1972. Alexandre Thienpont succeeded his father Léon in 1985. He subsequently worked alongside his son Guillaume, who has been involved in the technical management of the estate since 2011. Winemaking is now overseen by Guillaume Thienpont, at an estate that remains family-owned.

A fine offering, the 1998 has closed down, but there is no doubting its fabulous potential. The color is a dense purple. The wine reveals high tannin, huge body, and classy black fruits intermixed with minerals, spice box, cedar, and tobacco. A long, persistent, tannic finish gives this majestic effort a closed but formidable personality. Patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

Earthy tones here, together with reddish fruit character and fresh violets. Medium-bodied with a fleshy yet forthright attack, silky tannins and crisp acidity. The finish is a little more drying, due to warm alcohol. The warmth of the vintage definitely shows in the glass, yet there’s good potential for aging. A blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet sauvignon. No cabernet franc in this vintage. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

‘Alexandre: “In 1998, Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons reached maturity very early, and within a few days of each other. It’s rare. During this very hot summer, the Cabernet Francs suffered from excessive drought, which considerably slowed down their maturity and they did not make it into the final blend which was 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to Pomerol’s precocious soils, we were able to harvest before the heavy rains between 21 and 26 September. Small harvest of 34 hl/ha.” Unusual assemblage! Roy Richards has never encountered brett in his bottles of 1998. Deep crimson. Very sumptuous nose – beguiling texture. Gentle, gorgeous tannin management. Superb for me but the brett police reject it. But so lovely on the end. And very concentrated. But hopeless for anyone sensitive to brett.
