Château La Violette

Château La Violette is a very small estate in Pomerol, situated on the Catusseau plateau, close to Trotanoy and Le Pin. Its 1.68-hectare vineyard, planted with Merlot, belongs to the Parent family through Vignobles Parent. The estate practises hand-harvesting and vinifies all its wine in barrels.

Histoire du domaine

The name Château La Violette is linked to the floral character traditionally associated with its wine. According to the history published by the estate, a description of the wine from the late 19th century – which notably evoked a scent of violets – is said to have inspired the name of the cuvée. The estate comprises four plots situated on the Pomerol plateau. It was acquired in 2006 by Vignobles Parent, then known as Vignobles Péré-Vergé, which already owned Châteaux Le Gay and Montviel. Catherine Péré-Vergé oversaw the development of these estates in Pomerol before her death in 2013. Her children, including Henri Parent, have continued the family business. The vineyard now covers 1.68 hectares and is planted with Merlot. The grapes are harvested by hand, in two or three passes depending on the ripeness of the plots, and then destemmed by hand. Vinification takes place directly in barrels, following a ‘micro-vinification’ or ‘integral vinification’ approach. Florian Pesquier currently oversees the winemaking as cellar master, whilst Philippe Thibault manages the vineyard.

Made of 100% Merlot, the deep garnet colored 2010 La Violette comes bounding out of the glass with notes of kirsch, black raspberries, baked cherries and mulberries plus wafts of stewed tea, cedar chest and dried Provence herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is still carrying a lot of oak with youthful black and red berry preserves layers and a chewy texture, finishing very long and spritely.

Charming floral nose with violet and fragrant wild strawberries. Equally fine on the palate with wonderfully textured fine fruit and silky tannins. Racy and well balanced. So drinkable now but better in 2016.

Tasted blind. Deep garnet with a soft pink rim. Gorgeously seductive red-fruits nose, just a little bit meaty – and more so in the glass. Firm and more savoury on the palate but still packed with fruit sweetness. Thick but smooth tannins. I don’t know if the meatiness has anything to do with brett but at the moment it is not excessive.
