Histoire du domaine
The site occupies a former fortress, featuring a crenellated square tower dating back to the 13th century. Its documented winemaking history begins in 1643 with Charles Le Guérin, Lord of Coutet, and the estate remained in the hands of his descendants until 1788. That year, Gabriel-Barthélemy Romain de Filhot became its owner. Following the French Revolution, Coutet passed to his grandson, Marquis Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces, who was also connected to Châteaux d'Yquem, de Fargues, Filhot, and de Malle. The estate remained in this family until the 1920s, and in the meantime was recognized as a Premier Grand Cru of Sauternes and Barsac during the 1855 classification. In 1926, Lyon industrialist Henry-Louis Guy acquired the property and installed his Guy & Mital hydraulic presses. His daughter and her second husband, Edmond Rolland, then managed Coutet until 1977; Cuvée Madame perpetuates the memory of this former owner. In 1977, Marcel Baly and his sons Philippe and Dominique purchased the château and undertook the renovation of the vineyard and operational buildings. Philippe Baly has served as general manager since the late 1980s, while Dominique Baly participates in the estate's management and representation. An exclusive technical and commercial partnership was established in 1994 with Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA. Aline Baly, Marcel's granddaughter, joined the family business in 2008 and took charge of its marketing and communications management. The 2010 vintage finally marked the creation of Opalie de Château Coutet, the estate's dry white wine.
