Domaine Weingut Egon Muller
Weingut Egon Müller – Scharzhof is a family-run estate in the Saarland, based in Wiltingen, in the Moselle wine region of Germany. Run by Egon Müller IV, it cultivates Riesling exclusively across 16.5 hectares, notably on the Scharzhofberg and in the local vineyards of Wiltingen. The estate has its origins in the former Scharzhof, acquired in 1797 following the secularisation of church property.

Histoire du domaine
The Scharzhof was acquired in 1797 by Jean-Jacques Koch from the French Republic, in the context of the secularisation that followed the French Revolutionary occupation. The slopes of the Scharzhofberg had previously been cultivated for centuries by ecclesiastical institutions in Trier. On Koch’s death in 1829, the estate was divided amongst his seven children. His daughter Elisabeth married Felix Müller, a native of the Black Forest, and the couple’s wine-growing estate subsequently grew through inheritances and acquisitions. In 1887, their son Egon Müller I married Therese Tuckermann; the purchase of a share of the estate from his sister subsequently contributed to its expansion. The Scharzhofberg wines and the Müller family were honoured at the 1900 Paris World’s Fair. Egon Müller II died in an accident in the vineyards in 1941, and his wife Elisabeth took charge of the estate during the war. On his return from captivity in 1945, Egon Müller III took over the estate, whose harvest at that time amounted to just 1,200 litres from 7.4 hectares. In 1954, he purchased half of the neighbouring Le Gallais estate and leased the other half of its vineyards in Wiltingen. Egon Müller III then ran the Scharzhof with his son from 1985 to 1991; Egon Müller IV has been in charge of its management and winemaking ever since.
