Alvarez Alion 2014 Bouteille (75cl)
Alión 2014 is a red wine from Vega Sicilia, produced in Spain within the Ribera del Duero appellation in Castile and León. This cuvée is 100% Tempranillo, locally known as Tinto Fino. It originates from a selection of parcels situated across several sectors of the appellation, particularly around Padilla de Duero, Valbuena de Duero, and Pesquera de Duero. Aging in French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months shapes the structure and defines Alión's signature style.

Histoire du domaine
The name Vega de Sicilia first appeared in 1577 to refer to this estate situated on the banks of the Duero. In 1848, Toribio Lecanda acquired the estate from the Marquis of Valbuena. His son, Eloy Lecanda, established a professional wine-making business there in 1864. The winemaking facilities were completed in 1882. The estate was sold to Pascual Herrero Bux in 1888, then purchased at auction by Antonio Herrero Vázquez in 1897; it subsequently remained in the family for several generations. In 1950, the seed company Prodes acquired the property and Bodegas Vega Sicilia S.A. was established; Jesús Anadón then became a key figure in its development. Hans Neumann bought the estate in 1965. The Álvarez Mezquíriz family acquired it in 1982 and have remained the owners ever since. A major modernisation of the vineyard and winery was completed in 2014, to mark the company’s 150th anniversary. Gonzalo Iturriaga is currently the technical director of the Tempos Vega Sicilia group.
Alion
Alión is a red wine from Ribera del Duero crafted from Tinto Fino and sourced from a selection of complementary terroirs across the appellation. Created as an independent project, it offers a more modern expression than the classic style of Vega Sicilia. Its aging combines wood and concrete as needed, with a significant role given to oak barrels.
- Origin of the cuvée name
- The name Alión refers to the territory of León, where the patriarch of the Álvarez family was born.
- Cuvée creation year
- 1991
- Style of the cuvée
- A structured, intense, and fleshy red wine that seeks a balance between depth, freshness, and elegance. Its modern profile highlights the fruit of Tinto Fino, the diversity of Ribera del Duero's terroirs, and mastered oak aging.
- Position within the range
- An autonomous and modern wine of the group, distinct from Vega Sicilia's classic cuvées and not designed as their second wine.
Histoire de la cuvée
The Álvarez family created Alión in 1991 to produce, within the same appellation as Vega Sicilia, a modern wine with an independent identity. The first vintages were vinified in Vega Sicilia's facilities before the new winery started operations with the 1993 harvest. The first documented vintage is 1991, commercialized in 1995.
