Histoire du domaine

The origin of the name Certan dates back to ancient times, whilst the history of the wine estate is linked to the de May family, of Scottish origin, who are said to have founded it in the 16th century. The estate adopted the name Vieux Château Certan in 1745, a date also recognised by the appellation’s governing body as the year the vineyard was established. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner and had the château renovated; its general appearance has been preserved. Georges Thienpont and his wife Joséphine acquired the property in the spring of 1924. On the death of Georges Thienpont in 1962, his son Léon took over the running of the estate. A significant portion of the vineyard was replanted following the frost of 1956, and a new winery was built in 1972. Alexandre Thienpont succeeded his father Léon in 1985. He subsequently worked alongside his son Guillaume, who has been involved in the technical management of the estate since 2011. Winemaking is now overseen by Guillaume Thienpont, at an estate that remains family-owned.

Not an easy vintage in Bordeaux, which is reflected in this evolved wine with dominant, earthy tones on the nose, together with hints of rhubarb, game, smoke and sludge. Light- to medium-bodied, tight and crisp with a slightly raw finish. Drink now.

‘Mild winter. March had cold, snow and hail. April very cold. May very fine and then cold and rain. Good flowering, warm and dry. The weather was unsettled for most of the growing season with intermittent storms, with a slight break in the clouds for a warm end July and beginning of August. A late harvest, around 6 October under good conditions, finished a difficult year.’ Made from the third of the vines that were not frosted. Mid ruby with a pale rim. Oxidised nose. Dry finish.
