The Gordon Macphail George & J.G. Smith's Glenlivet 1955 is an amber Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, distilled in 1955 and aged for 57 years. Selected and bottled by Gordon & Macphail under the historic George & J.G. Smith’s label, it was bottled in 2012 at 43%. This release comes from a first-fill sherry cask, an aging process that defines its identity among the very old Glenlivet single malts.

Gordon & MacPhail is a Scottish family-run spirits company based in Elgin, Speyside. Founded in 1895 as a grocer’s and wine and spirits merchant, it has become a specialist in the maturation and bottling of single malt Scotch whisky. It owns the Benromach distillery in Forres and The Cairn distillery near Grantown-on-Spey.

Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 in Elgin, in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region, by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, as a grocers’ shop specialising in teas, coffees, wines and whiskies. John Urquhart joined the company in 1915 as an apprentice to the founders and gradually specialised in the selection, purchase and maturation of malt whiskies. His son George joined the company in 1933 and helped develop the process of selecting distillates and maturing them in oak casks. In the late 1960s, George Urquhart launched the Connoisseurs’ Choice range, dedicated to single malts from various Scottish distilleries and bottled under the Gordon & MacPhail name. The Urquhart family acquired the Benromach distillery, located in Forres, in 1993 and restored it before reopening it in 1998. The company opened a second distillery, The Cairn, near Grantown-on-Spey, in October 2022. Since 2024, Gordon & MacPhail has ceased filling new casks at third-party distilleries and is focusing its long-term development on its own distilleries. The company remains owned by the Urquhart family, with Stephen Rankin representing the fourth generation within the business.
